Physical Movement as the Foundation of Musicianship

Section titled “Physical Movement as the Foundation of Musicianship”

Founded in the early 20th century by Swiss composer and educator Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, this approach relies on the body as the primary instrument for understanding music. By experiencing musical time, space, energy, and form through physical movement, students cultivate deep rhythmic accuracy, physical coordination, and emotional expression.

  • Eurhythmics (Movement): Translates acoustic properties (tempo, meter, accents, phrasing) into physical movement. Students walk, run, skip, and use gestural movements to demonstrate and internalize musical concepts.
  • Solfège (Ear Training): Employs movable-do or fixed-do vocal training, pitch match, and dictation to train the ear to hear and sing pitch relationships with absolute clarity.
  • Improvisation: Develops rapid cognitive and musical responses. Students respond instantly to improvised piano signals from the teacher, or improvise their own musical answers using voice, body, or instruments.
  • Mind-Body Coordination: Focuses on developing a rapid connection between the brain’s musical intentions and the body’s muscular execution, eliminating tension and promoting natural artistry.
