The Finnish Kodály-Based String Method
Section titled “The Finnish Kodály-Based String Method”Colourstrings is a child-friendly, holistic string instrument pedagogy developed by Hungarian-born educators Géza and Csaba Szilvay in Finland. Fully integrated with Zoltán Kodály’s musical philosophy, the method uses visual color-coded notation and child-centered imagery to build impeccable technique and deep internal hearing.
Core Pedagogical Pillars
Section titled “Core Pedagogical Pillars”- Visual Notation and Color-Coding: Introduces note reading using colorful symbols, simplified staves, and cute characters (e.g. the “Lasse” and “Lilli” bird families) to make pitch and string shifts immediately understandable.
- Natural Bow Arm Development: Establishes relaxed and fluid bowing mechanics using short, natural motions before introducing complex technical finger work.
- Relative Pitch & Singing: Incorporates solfege singing alongside violin, viola, cello, or double bass playing to ensure students can hear every pitch internally before producing it on their instrument.
- Comprehensive Instrument Training: Available as a comprehensive curriculum with sequential student books, tutor manuals, and chamber music ensemble collections.
